Over the long run, data we save and stores in hard drive(HDD) will get fragmented in various locations. As a result, which affects the performance and efficiency of HDD data retrieval. In turn, this slows down the performance of your system.

Defragmentation is the process of finding this scattered fragmented pieces and locate them closer in physical space. This increases the data retrieval efficiency and performance of the system.

Windows provides the in-built application to defragment and optimize drives in windows 10.

In this tutorial, we will see how to defragment and optimize drives in windows 10.

Two ways to defragment and optimize drives in windows 10

Using Windows inbuilt Defragment and optimize drive tool

Follow the below steps to defragment and optimize drives in Windows 10 using Windows inbuilt defragment and optimize drive tool.

Step 1 : Open the defragment and optimize drive tool by typing defrag in Windows search bar.

Step 2 : Defragment and optimize drive tool will open and displays the list of drives attached to your computer. Select the drive you want to optimize and click on Analyze.

Step 3 : Check the analyzed result of the defragmentation. Ideally it should be less that 5% so that the defragmentation will be faster.

Click on optimize to proceed with defragmentation.

Once the defragmentation is done, you should be able to see 0% on the drive.

You can also setup the automatic optimisation and defragmentation upon selected frequency.

On the same defragment and optimize drive tool, click on change settings under scheduled optimization.

Then in the pop up, select the frequency and drive which you want to get auto optimized.
